Manabe Wetlands Restoration Project, Phase 1B
Address: Intersection of Ford and Kearney Streets and between Ohlone Parkway in the City of Watsonville, Santa Cruz County, California

Client: City of Watsonville

Project Type: Restoration Resources is providing construction and short-term maintenance

This project is part of a grant funded by the State Water Resources Control Board. It is an opportunity for the City’s future growth and wetland enhancement. The city has committed to restoring 25 acres of wetlands as part of the Manabe-Ow Annexation.

The purpose of the project is to create additional wetland habitat and to provide recreational and educational opportunities, such as Nature trails, in the restored upland area. The project will also provide a flood protection benefit to the City.

Our portion of the project will create 8 acres of new wetland habitat from an existing farm field. Our work includes excavation and hauling of soil material and grading the site to create both deeper, pond-like habitat, as well as islands of upland habitat. The project also includes the construction of Nature trails, erosion control, and native plant restoration.

Special Challenges:
The RR crew has had to change their method of excavation due to the extremely wet soil conditions. The soil is wet to the point of having no bottom, like peat.

  Sierra de Montserrat Community
Address: Town of Loomis, Placer County, California

Client: Westwood Homes

Project Type: Design & Consulting/Native Tree Mitigation & Replacement

Restoration Resources has been contracted to evaluate the potential for on-site creation of oak woodland mitigation as well as all services necessary to develop tree replacement and/or mitigation conceptual plans from impacts due to the development of the Sierra de Montserrat Community. This 322-acre, 62-parcel master planned community in the town of Loomis is unique in that in addition to estate-like home sites it includes vineyards.

Restoration Resources is establishing a baseline of information for use in evaluating on-site native tree mitigation/replacement. Compilation tactics include site visits, soil map review, site topography review, potential aerial photo review, interviews with knowledgeable parties, and/or any other appropriate techniques as needed for site assessment.

The assessment includes:
A habitat overview of the site, with respect to existing and proposed trees for mitigation and/or revegetation of Native Oaks, Pine, and Cottonwoods. Conceptual plans for removal of potentially harmful dead trees (snags) in a previously fire damaged area along Barton Road. Baseline information on the portion of the property dedicated to the installation of a water pumping facility. This information will be used to design a visual buffer composed of native plants and trees to obscure the view of the pump facility by neighbors and passers-by.

Project Deliverables:
The output of this project will be the overall mitigation/replacement and implementation plan, including conceptual design plans, conceptual planting plans, conceptual irrigation plans, implementation notes, details, and maintenance and monitoring notes.
